Gold vermeil (pronounced ver-may) is a premium jewelry finish that bridges the gap between fine and demi-fine. To be considered true vermeil, a piece must meet specific U.S. standards:
A solid sterling silver base (never brass or mystery metals)
A thick layer of gold—at least 2.5 microns
Gold of at least 10K fineness
Because vermeil uses real precious metals—gold layered over sterling silver—it offers a luxurious look and lasting quality at a more accessible price than solid gold. It’s ideal for everyday pieces with a fine-jewelry feel.
Vermeil is more durable than traditional gold plating, but like all layered metals, it needs mindful care to preserve its shine. The layer of gold on top will wear over time.
How to Care for Vermeil Jewelry
